Fecal Matter was a short-lived punk band from Aberdeen, Washington. It was formed by Kurt Cobain, who became famous as the frontman and guitarist of the grunge band, Nirvana. Fecal Matter recorded a demo tape (Illiteracy Will Prevail) which remains officially unreleased with the exception of the song "Spank Thru". Despite this, leaked portions of the album have been made available on bootlegs like "The Chosen Rejects" and "Outcesticide".

The band was formed in late 1985 and consisted of Cobain on guitar and vocals, Dale Crover on bass, and Greg Hokanson on drums. In December that year, Hokanson left the band. Later that month, Cobain and Crover went to the house of Cobain's aunt Mari Earle, in Seattle, with a large book of lyrics and recorded the demo Illiteracy Will Prevail on a 4-track.[1] Cobain performed guitar and vocals, while Crover played bass guitar, and drums.
In January 1986, Buzz Osborne joined on bass and Mike Dillard joined on drums. According to Michael Azerrad's Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana, Cobain thought Osborne did not take the band seriously enough and refused to buy a bass guitar amplifier.[1] In February, Fecal Matter disbanded and the Melvins recorded their debut EP.
Cobain began passing the demo tape around to friends and peers. He had wanted to start a band with acquaintance Krist Novoselic for some time. After hearing the tape in mid-1986, and particularly liking the song "Spank Thru", Novoselic agreed to form a band (later to be known as Nirvana).
"Spank Thru" is the only track from the tape to be officially released (see the 2005 Nirvana rarities album Sliver: The Best of the Box). "Downer" was re-recorded for Nirvana's Bleach album. The song "Anorexorcist" (part of a 9-minute medley on the Fecal Matter demo) was also re-recorded by Nirvana and their version saw release on 2004's With the Lights Out box set.
In March 2006, an incomplete poor-quality version of Illiteracy Will Prevail was leaked. A week later, three full songs from the demo were briefly hosted on a MySpace site ("Sound of Dentage", "Bambi Slaughter" and "Laminated Effect"). The clips were confirmed authentic by collector Mike Ziegler and others who had heard the demo. Additional songs were leaked in November 2007.
